This traditional Japanese digging knife, known overseas as a Hori Hori knife, is a serrated, Japan-exclusive design that handles almost any job in the garden.
Use it for pruning, tending flower beds, and transplanting seedlings and bulbs — its curved, scoop-shaped blade slices through soil and lifts roots with ease. The form traces back to the bamboo digging tools once used by Japan's mountain hunters, the matagi, who sharpened split bamboo to gather the bounty of the mountains; the blade's curve still follows that natural bamboo shape rather than a conventional spade.
The fully hardened blade is mirror-polished for excellent rust resistance, and its serrated edge gives a sharp, confident cut. Equally at home on a camping trip or in the garden, it is valued by keen gardeners as a tool that covers a wide range of tasks with a single blade.
