Michihamono Woodblock Print U-Gouge, 1mm, made in Japan.
• Uses the U-shaped blade to carve smooth grooves, and the edge is easy to resharpen.
• As the edge shortens, the blade can be extended further out of the handle for continued use.
• Blade is high-speed steel (SKH-51), suited to plywood such as shina (basswood) veneer, and holds an edge about three times longer than conventional blades.
• Handle is cherry (sakura) wood; removing the brass ferrule lets the handle slide to adjust how far the blade extends.
• The high-speed steel edge is thin and backed with very soft iron in a two-layer construction, so it sharpens like ordinary tool steel and resists losing its temper under machine sharpening.
• The brass ferrule can loosen over time as the wood dries; wrapping a layer of tape around the handle before refitting the ferrule keeps it from slipping off.
