Michihamono HSS Kamakura Gouge 12mm, made in Japan.
• A flat chisel ground into a clam-shell shaped, rounded edge.
• Resists tearing the wood at the edges of a cut; used bevel-up, it can produce a mark similar to an extra-shallow round gouge.
• Often used for Kamakura-bori carving.
• The HSS edge (SKH-51) lasts three times longer than earlier blades.
• The sakura (cherry) wood handle is hard and long-lasting, with a good weight balance for applying force.
• The HSS section is thin, backed with very soft iron, so it sharpens almost like ordinary steel and resists losing its temper even under machine sharpening.
